从前有一个公主，非常骄傲；每当有人来向她求婚的时候，她就出一个谜儿给他猜，如果他猜不出，他就要受到嘲弄，并且就被撵走。她出了张布告说，谁能猜中谜儿，不论是什么人，她就同他结婚。最后有三个裁缝一起来了。那两个大的以为他们做过许多巧妙的勾当，都得到了成功，因此这次他们去猜公主出的谜语一定可以成功。那第三个裁缝是一个无用的冒失鬼。他连自己裁缝手艺都不精通，但是他想，他这次一定要得到成功，不然的话，哪里还再有这种好事呢。另外两个裁缝向他说：“你留在家里吧，你什么都不懂，能够做什么事呢？”但是小裁缝并不灰心，他说一个拿定主意的人，一定有办法。他高兴地走去，好像整个世界都是他的。
