从前，有姐弟二人相依为命。后来，姐姐有了一个儿子。儿子长大以后，就和舅舅一起为官府织金缕锦及各种各样美丽的绫罗绸缎。

　　甥舅二人日夜操劳，织出的美丽锦缎把达官贵人们打扮得漂漂亮亮，把国王的宫殿装点得富丽堂皇，自己却过着衣不蔽体、食不果腹的贫困生活。

　　他们实在不甘心就这样悲惨地生活下去，就一起商议，用什么方法，才能使自己生活得稍微好一些。

　　外甥说："这样下去，我们不是累死，就是饿死、冻死，我看，实在逼得咱们走投无路，就只能去偷、去抢了。"

　　舅舅叹息道："我干了几十年，如今还是一无所有，把咱们逼到这一步，是世道不公啊!"

　　外甥一听舅舅没有反对之意，就说："谁富也没有国王富，要偷，咱们不偷别人，就偷国王!"

　　舅舅说："国王的宫里守卫森严，要从他的仓库拿到东西，实在太难啦!"

　　外甥想了想，说："我有好主意啦!咱们经常进宫送绸缎，知道仓库的位置，不如夜里挖地道，钻到国王的仓库里，拿一些金银珠宝，就够咱们过好多年呢!"

　　舅舅一听，说："好主意!反正国王的财宝也是搜刮百姓的，拿走一些也应该!"

　　甥舅俩商议已定，就准备起来，每天晚上织完绸缎后，就悄悄地挖地道。好在他们家离王宫里的仓库不太远，没有多久，地道就挖好了。

　　夜深了，他们拿好盛东西的口袋，悄悄地从地道钻进了国王的仓库。"啊!这么多金银财宝，真是数也数不清呀!"甥舅俩看得眼都花了，满屋里都是金灿灿、光闪闪、亮晶晶、蓝碧碧、红彤彤……各种各样的珍宝，堆积如山。

　　外甥说："怪不得咱们这么穷呢，好东西都让他们拿走了!"

　　舅舅说："咱们快动手吧，不然，天亮了就会被卫兵发现的!"

　　于是甥舅俩分头行动，每人装了满满一大包珍宝，高高兴兴地回家了。

　　第二天，守卫珍宝仓库的卫兵进库查对存物时，发现少了不少珍宝，吓出一身冷汗。他不敢隐瞒，急急忙忙跑去向国王报告。

　　国王一听，大怒："谁这么大的胆子?竟敢来我的仓库盗窃珍宝!"他刚要下令搜索全城，缉拿小偷，忽一转念，对卫兵说："这件事一定不要声张出去，咱们就好像什么事也没有发生过一样。这样一来，小偷会以为我们事务繁忙，还不知道仓库里丢失了东西。他们一次得手，没有被抓，就还会来第二次。你们务必加强守卫，在仓库里多藏伏兵，只要他们敢再来，就立即抓住，千万不能放跑一个人!"

　　卫兵见国王并未责罚自己，便发誓要忠于职守，一定捉住偷宝人。

　　果然，甥舅俩顺利地从国王的仓库中窃得许多珍宝后，日夜提心吊胆，连干活也不能安心。可过了许多天以后，见宫中并无动静，就又计议起来。

　　舅舅说："看来，他们还没有发现珍宝丢失一事，咱们不如再去拿一些，还可多维持几年生活。况且，我年岁也大了，以后连织活儿都费劲儿了，靠你一个人织活，怎么能行呢?"

　　外甥说："舅舅虑得很是。只是我有些担心，万一他们加强了守卫，咱们可就不好跑了。"

　　舅舅沉吟了一下，说："有备无患啊!这次，咱们不要一起进仓库，我先去探探虚实，没事儿，你再进拿完珠宝就赶快走。"

　　外甥说："舅舅年纪大了，怎能让您先探路呢?还是我先去吧!"

　　舅舅说："我们姐弟二人，只守着你一个独苗苗，万一你出了危险，我怎么向你母亲交待?还是我先去，即使有什么事，你还可以随机应变。"

　　外甥扭不过舅舅，只好说："也好。您先进去，万一被他们抓住，我年轻力壮的，会设法救您的，实在放不了，也定会为您报仇雪恨!"

　　甥舅俩按事先想好的方案，又一次从地道里向仓库钻去。不料，舅舅刚一露头，就被一大群卫兵团署围住。舅舅年老力衰，挣脱不得，被活活抓住。舅舅拼命呼喊，以警告外甥。

　　走在后面的外甥听到前面的动静，本想上前帮助舅舅，但见对方人多，恐自己寡不敌众，便迅速退出去，跑了。

　　守库人连忙追赶，无奈外甥腿快路熟，一会儿便跑得无影无踪。守库士兵只好回来，严刑拷打舅舅，让他供出同伙人，舅舅死也不肯招供。士兵们见夜已深，只好暂时把舅舅关押起来，等天亮后，送到国王面前，听凭发落。

　　外甥跑出老远，见士兵没再追赶，就又潜进王宫，寻找舅舅的下落。终于在一间小房子里找到了舅舅。

　　守卫的士兵因折腾了大半夜，已困倦不堪，靠墙打盹儿。

　　外甥蹑手蹑脚地偷来士兵腰间挂着的钥匙，进了关押舅舅的小屋。只见舅舅已被拷打得遍体麟伤，奄奄一息。

　　"舅舅，您醒醒!"外甥急切地轻声呼唤着。

　　舅舅费力地睁开眼，一见是外甥，就挣扎着说："甥……儿，我不行……了，我死后，你……你把我的……头，割……割下，免得让……让人认出来，会去……去抓你。"

　　外甥抱紧舅舅，泪如泉涌，又不敢放声痛哭，说："不行，我怎忍心割下舅舅的头，我背您走吧，啊，舅舅!"

　　"不……你，听话，我活不……了啦，别连……累你……听舅舅的……话……"说完，头一歪，死了。

　　外甥轻轻把舅舅在地上放好，本想把舅舅的尸体背回去，但听到屋外有巡逻士兵说话的声音传来。越来越近，万般无奈，只好狠狠心，按照舅舅的临终遗言，割下舅舅的头，脱下外衣，包好，迅速闪出小房子，一会儿就隐没在黑沉沉的夜色之中。

　　犯人的头不见了，这事可非同小可。守卫士兵不敢隐瞒，第二天一大早，就上殿报告了国王。

　　国王想："这么说，盗贼的同伙是怕人认出，才把这个老贼的头割下拿走的，好狡猾的贼呀。"

　　国王对士兵们说："去，把这具无头尸扔在宫殿外十字街头，派人严加把守，只要有人来收尸，定是小偷的同伙，立即给我抓住!"

　　士兵们依言，把舅舅的尸体扔在了十字路口。可怜，舅舅辛辛苦苦劳累了一生，最后，竟暴尸街头。

　　市民们不知发生了什么事，只见一大队士兵把在街口，地上放着一具无头尸体，都不忍目睹，只是站得远远地议论着。

　　士兵们整整把守了一天，脚也站麻了，肚子也饿了，也没见一个人前来收尸。

　　天慢慢地昏暗下来，一支远方来的商队走进城，浩浩荡荡的车队，满载货物，看不见车队之尾。车队从十字路口经过。不知何故，拉车的马突然惊了，狂奔起来，直向士兵们冲来。士兵们吓得不知所措。只见两辆载满稻草的车翻了，稻草恰巧遮住了尸体。商人们整好车马，走了。

　　第二天，守尸的士兵把头一天的情况禀告给了国王。

　　国王想："他们没有乘乱把尸体取走，而是用稻草盖住了尸体，看来是打算就地火葬啊!好大胆子的盗贼，看我能不能抓住你!"

　　于是国王命令："你们不要动那尸体，只需给我严加看守就行了，假如有人前来点燃那稻草，就马上给我抓来，不得有误!"

　　士兵们连连应着，去了。

　　头天晚上，外甥取出一些偷来的珠宝，雇了一个商队，巧妙地把舅舅的尸体用稻草盖好。这次，他早已料定国王是不会善罢甘休的，就又想出一计，与国王斗智。

　　又是太阳快要下山的时候了，十字街头人来人往。突然，随着阵阵音乐声，一大队人举着火把，随着音乐边走边舞，来到了十字路口。跳舞的人们头戴面具，手持火把，又唱又跳，身体随着音乐的节奏摇摆着、扭动着，吸引了很多过往的行人。

　　守尸的士兵们劳累了一天，见此不觉兴致大生，也忘了自己的职守，站在边上咧着大嘴，观看起来。自己的身体也不由自主地随着音乐的节拍晃动起来。

　　跳舞的人们更起劲儿了，音乐声越来越大，节奏越来越快，舞者们简直要疯狂了，观看的人们也不禁欢呼跳跃起来。

　　头戴面具，手持火把的外甥也混在跳舞的人群之中，随着一声呼哨，有几个人手中的火把投向了稻草，火光顿时冲天而起，映红了天。人们还高兴地继续唱着，跳着。

　　守尸的士兵们一见稻草起火，这才如梦方醒，急忙大叫："谁点的火?快抓住他!"士兵们四处抓人，跳舞的，围观的一哄而散。士兵忙了半天，一个人也没有抓到。

　　士兵们只好灰溜溜地来到国王面前禀报。国王气得大叫："我怎么嘱咐你们的?又没有抓住!"

　　士兵们吓得大气也不敢出，低头听训。

　　国王骂够了，消了消气，说："小偷既然敢来焚尸，就还会来收骨灰的。你们这次给我好好把守着街口，谁来收骨灰，就给我抓住，听清楚了没有?"士兵连连称是，退了下去，又增加了守卫的人数，严加守卫。

　　入夜，外甥顶着一罐上好的美酒，来到十字路口：边走边唱："佳酿美酒香又醇，喝酒解谗又壮身，呜哇呜，哇呜哇，香香的美酒真馋人!"

　　他走到一个士兵面前，放下酒罐，盛了一大碗自顾自地喝起来，那浓郁的酒香飘散开来，士兵们馋得直咂嘴儿。

　　一个士兵忍不住了，说："卖我一碗好不好?"

　　外甥看看他，说："卖你一碗，那他们都要怎么办?我只有一罐好酒，还留着慢慢喝呢!"说着收起碗，顶着罐子就要走。

　　士兵们呼啦一下围了过来，说："我们多给钱，卖给我们吧!我们连着好几天没喝上水，吃上饭啦!"

　　外甥装作被纠缠不过的样子，把一罐酒都卖给了他们。士兵们饥渴难捱，逮着好酒，咕咚咚一气饮下，一个个喝得酩酊大醉，倒在地上。

　　外甥连忙跑到舅舅-的骨灰旁，哭着说："舅舅呀！你死得好惨，甥儿给你收骨灰来了。"把舅舅的遗骨；装进罐子里，带走了。

　　等醉倒的卫兵们醒来后，发现不见了地上的骨灰，方知是又上当了。他们只好如实地向国王报告。

　　国王指着士兵们的鼻子，大发雷霆："你们这些废物，抓一个小偷，抓了四次都没有抓住，要你们何用？国王处罚了失职的士兵后，仍不解气，想道："这个小偷实在是狡猾之极，我精心设计的一个个圈套，都被他识破。我一定要想一个良策，诱他上钩，抓住他，看看到底谁厉害!"

　　国王冥思苦想，终于想出一个绝妙的诱贼之计。国王有一个绝顶美丽的女儿，爱若掌上明珠，年方二八，尚未招得附马。国王就打算以自己心爱的女儿为诱饵，骗小偷上钩，来捉拿他。

　　国王派人为女儿盖了一座四面环水的美丽的水上宫殿，装饰得金碧辉煌，再把用各种珠宝首饰、华美衣服装扮的公主，送进水上宫殿。让公主宛若月中嫦娥、瑶池仙女一般，叫人可望不可及，并派了许多精壮的士兵，严严实实地守卫着水上宫殿，外人插翅也难以飞进。

　　国王仍不放心，对女儿千叮咛万嘱咐："女儿，如果有人闯入，你就抓住他，大声呼叫，守卫的士兵们就会立刻冲进来把他抓住，千万记住，要大声喊叫，还要抓牢他，不要让他溜掉!"公主点点头。

　　国王暗想："魔高一尺，道高一丈。有我漂亮的女儿作诱饵，小偷呀，小偷，还怕你不落在我的手心么?"

　　国王为公主建造了美丽的水上宫殿，守卫士兵日夜守护着公主的消息不胫而走。满城的人都在议论公主如何如何美丽，天下无双；宫殿如何如何巍峨，独建水上……

　　外甥埋葬好舅舅的遗骨，一心想着如何报复国王，听得人们如此说，又心生一计。

　　这天夜里，外甥悄悄来到水上宫殿附近，观察地形和士兵守卫的情况。一看，果然如人们传说的那样，外人是很难进入宫殿的。他就顺着水流方向逆水而上，找来一些木头。他轻轻地把一根木头放入水中，让它顺流而下，朝水上宫殿漂去。

　　守卫的士兵听见水中有声，又见一黑黑的东西"游"过来，就一齐去抓，结果，却是一截木头。他们不经意地又巡逻起来。

　　一会儿，又听到水面有动静，士兵们又一阵忙乱，捞起的还是一截木头。如此一而再、再而三地，士兵们有些疲倦了，心想："这么一座水上宫殿，插翅都难以飞进，从水里还能有人潜入，找死呢!"他们又累又困，就倒头呼呼睡起了大觉。

　　外甥用几截木头试探过后，见卫兵们都困倦了，这才抱着根木头，悄悄向水上宫殿潜来。守卫的士兵们竟然无人知晓。

　　外甥悄悄走进公主的寝宫，借着月光细看正在熟睡的公主，赞叹不已，顿时心生爱意。

　　公主被惊醒，见自己寝宫中进来一个英俊的青年，吓了一跳，她忙问："你是什么人?怎么闯进我的寝宫来的?"

　　外甥说："公主不要害怕。我因爱慕公主，才冒险闯入这水上宫殿，并非要伤害公主。"

　　公主见他一表人材，温文尔雅，也不禁产生爱慕之心，并以身相许。

　　外甥看天快亮了，恋恋不舍地要离开公主，公主不忍离别。外甥说："我若不走，被士兵抓到，你父王就会杀掉我的。"

　　公主流下泪来，抽泣道："那我们何时才能相见?"

　　外甥说："会相见的，你等着吧!"

　　正在这时，寝宫门外响起了巡逻士兵的脚步声，外甥起身要走，公主紧紧拉住他，失声痛哭。

　　门外士兵听到了，冲进寝宫。外甥只好逃走。因走得匆忙，一片衣襟被撕下。

　　国王听说了此事，仰天长叹："此人胜我一筹。我真是赔了女儿又折兵啊!"

　　公主怀孕了。十个月后，生下-个漂漂亮亮，白白胖胖，可爱的小男孩。

　　望着小婴儿，国王又想出一计。他让小孩子的奶娘抱着婴孩，在城中各处转悠，如果有人上前来亲吻婴孩，就把他抓住。

　　奶娘看附近有家饼铺，就走进去，想找点儿东西给小孩儿吃。外甥就在这饼铺里。他听行人们说，有人抱着公主的儿子在街上转悠，就想过去亲亲自己的孩子。可一见奶娘身后那一队士兵，就明白了。这又是国王的诱捕之计呀!

　　看着奶娘走进饼铺，外甥计上心来。他走到奶娘跟前，举起一杯牛奶，说："这是谁家的孩子呀，哭得好可怜，来，快喂他喝下牛奶，就不哭了。"

　　奶娘一看是位年轻英俊的先生，就千恩万谢地接过牛奶来，慢慢喂着小孩儿。外甥乘势站在一边看着自己的儿子，心里酸酸的："孩子呀，爸爸就在你身旁，却不能相认，也不能去见你的妈妈，唉……"

　　奶娘一边喂着小孩，一边端详面前的青年，心想："可怜的公主，如今有了孩子，却不知孩子的父亲在哪儿……要是孩子的父亲也像这个青年一样英俊、和蔼就好了。"
